Jewel Shooting for IED: Amelie
Jewel Shooting for IED: Amelie
Jewel Design Exam session. Amelie vision about Electrical Power Cables. The pattern shows the internal material in a unique way

New vision from a copper wire

I really enjoy taking pictures for IED's Jewel Design Exams.

Amelie's intuition is stunning: starting from industrial wire copper she cut part of the insulating plastic. The cuts are a constant pattern that reveal the inner white material below.

Only a close inspection reveal the origin of the material: industrial copper wire

There are several colours in industrial wire copper. For electricity purpose the choice goes from brown to blue to yellow/green.

Amelie's choice for the blue wire is ideal to make a strong contrast with skin's hue

Amelie prepared all the details for the shooting. The fabric used for the still life pictures is the same coat used for the shooting with the model

The jewel Photo Shooting is a good chance to show Photo Students more advanced techniques.

During this long session I really appreciated the presence of Federica B. on the set. At first as assistant then as second photographer for the pictures of detail. Federica enjoyed the photo shooting and the challenge of arranging items on the set for engaging shots.

I like the chance to use fast lens. The shallow depth of field is always a good way to make variations on the set.

Amelie's vision covers the details of the make up of the models too: eyelash length and colour match the material's footprint

Thanks to Federica's presence I was lucky enough to have a decent backstage coverage

Working with wide modifiers helps to soften the skin texture. Bounce panels give the necessary fill light in the shadows.

Some more words on what it means to work with Jewel Design Students:

  • most of time there are only few hours to get all the shots
  • pieces are prototypes
  • There may be a lot of reflections
  • the most technical views are shot with Focus Stacking to get maximum details
  • no post processing! They get the best from the camera
